You may have heard of Car Free Day before, experienced it in Vancouver, or you may think it’s an event where everyone gets a new car like that episode of Oprah…
On Sunday, June 21 from 12pm to 6pm, six continuous blocks of Douglas Street from the Victoria Public Market (Herald Street) to The Bay Centre (Fort Street), will be closed to traffic and consumed by over 200 vendors, food trucks, three stages of music, entertainment and talent, and thousands of people!
If that doesn’t sound exciting enough, there’s also plans for a skate ramp, a grassy park, a craft beer garden, farmer’s market, tours of downtown and more! This will be an event that will have a little something for everyone.
Car Free Day started in Vancouver 10 years ago and they have seen it grow into an event with tens of thousands of people. The Downtown Victoria Business Association (DVBA) and Atomique Productions thought it was about time Victoria got on board.
“Car Free Day is a celebration of community and downtown and a chance for people to leave their cars for a day and hit the streets to experience Downtown Victoria’s biggest street fair,” commented Kristy Fallon, Marketing and Events Manager for the DVBA. “This festival will see Douglas Street being filled by Victoria businesses, performers, artisans, makers, service providers, and not-for-profits which will come out and show what it is that they do best through interactive exchanges with people from our community. This is an opportunity to see Douglas Street beyond just a transportation corridor and start imagining how we want to use it in the future.”
